The concept of the ecocycle was first suggested by Brenda Zimmerman and myself in 1994 (http://www.davidkhurst.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/From-Life-Cycle-to-Ecocycle-1994.pdf). We, in turn, got the idea from Canadian ecologist C.S. Holling’s adaptive cycle. It was Holling and his associates who developed the concept of panarchy. You can see a recent presentation on the concept of the ecocycle and its implications for management here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ryxJ25pdUY&feature=

The metaphors that an ecological approach evokes are that of gardening rather than engineering — enabling contexts for adaptation rather than searching for ‘levers for change’. See https://medium.com/@davidkhurst/lead-like-a-gardener-b4c6181af8e5
